East of Liberty: Out of the Theater

Over the past three years, filmmaker Chris Ivey’s documentary film series, East of Liberty, has looked at hot-button urban social issues - race, class, gentrification - with a brutal honesty that’s impressed filmgoers from ‘Sliberty itself, all the way to London, Berlin and Barcelona. But the audience Ivey wants the most has sometimes alluded him: The work-a-day residents of those neighborhoods most touched by these issues.

In the spirit of his DIY filmmaking approach, rather than moan about the situation, Ivey has decided to take East of Liberty to the people, with a series of free, outdoor, neighborhood-oriented screenings this Fall supported by a Community Connections Grassroots grant.

The first two neighborhood screenings have been announced - watch this space for updates on screenings in the Hill District and Lincoln-Larimer.

East of Liberty neighborhood screenings begin around dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m.) on these dates, in these locations:

Fri., Sept. 12, at Flagstaff Hill, Schenley Park, Oakland.

Sat., Sept. 20, at the Community Empowerment Association Gazebo at the corner of Frankstown and Homewood Ave.’s, Homewood.

For further information, or to book a screening for your community or organization, contact Chris Ivey at eastofliberty@eastofliberty.com or call 412-523-4793.

East of Liberty is a Allegheny County Grassroots Project supported by a $5,000 grant from Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections and The Sprout Fund.
