Mural artists hard at work throughout trail towns (Daily American)

The Daily American reported on the progress being made by artists in towns along the Great Allegheny Passage as part of the inaugural Trail Town Public Art Project, a Community Connections Regional grant recipient.

Three trail towns in Somerset County seem to have a different look these days.

That’s because the towns of Confluence, Meyersdale and Rockwood have been selected to participate in the inaugural Trail Town Public Art Program. Each town will have its own unique artwork - a mural in Meyersdale, a mural and sculpture in Rockwood and a monument in Confluence.

The Trail Town Program, an economic development initiative of The Progress Fund, in conjunction with Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections and The Sprout Fund, has made these designations. Several other towns beyond the borders of Somerset County and along the Great Allegheny Passage have been chosen as well.

Cathy McCollom, regional director of the Trail Town Program explained that the purpose of the art is to “both celebrate the Great Allegheny Passage and the heritage of the communities that border it. These public art pieces, created by local artists, will be placed in locations near the trail but with the purpose of being enjoyed by community residents as well as trail users.”

The art is to be installed in time for Celebration Saturday, Sept. 27. Celebration Saturday is a trail-wide event taking place from noon to 4 p.m. in celebration of the Great Allegheny Passage and the Trail Towns. Festivities are planned in West Newton, Connellsville, Ohiopyle, Confluence, Rockwood and Meyersdale. On that day each of these towns will hold dedication ceremonies for their own art designs.

Celebration Saturday will coincide with the start of the Venture Outdoors 250 Bike Tour, from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh the week of Sept. 27. The PNC Legacy Trail Ride from McKeesport to Point State Park will be held Oct. 4. To learn more about these and other Pittsburgh 250 events, visit www.imaginepittsburgh.com.
