Celebration Saturday (Daily Courier)
The Daily Courier reported on the activities associated with Celebration Saturday, September 27, 2008. The Trail Town Public Art Project is featured.
Common to all the towns during the event will be the presentation of public art. Fourteen installations in six communities share the theme “Cycle of Renewal.”
All of the works are part of the Trail Town Public Art Program, supported in part by Pittsburgh 250, The Sprout Fund and Community Foundation of Fayette County.
In Connellsville, sculptor Steven Fiscus of Cumberland, Md., created a metal and glass archway that will be placed over the Yough River Trail at Stewart’s Crossing.
In a separate project, Meeghan Triggs of Greensburg and Chris Galiyas of West Mifflin created murals on the three 30-foot high silos at the Youghiogheny Glass factory.
The art installations are intended as gateways along the trail at each of the city.
“The idea is to create a sense of place, and share Connellsville history,” said Michael Edwards, executive director of Connellsville Redevelopment Authority. “Moving forward is what this is all about. Connellsville can be a world-class city again. We have a lot to offer here.
“We need to get that sense of pride out to local citizens, so they can share it with visitors.”
