WordPlay is a project of Bricolage Production Company headed by Alan Olifson. The project is a live show, four times a year, where Pittsburgh’s comedy writers, actors, and everyday citizens tell true stories from their own lives. These stories are accompanied by a custom score played by a live DJ. Each performance features a different DJ, and the music accompaniment can range from incorporating Bach to Britney Spears. Olifson works with each reader and DJ to help craft the perfect score.
“WordPlay is a collaboration between words and music. We bring Pittsburgh’s stories to life by taking great storytellers from all walks and giving them a live soundtrack. It’s a new spin on the oldest form of entertainment.” – Alan Olifson; creator, producer, perfomer
The performance is a true collaborative process. By merging rich storytelling with creative music, WordPlay melds the distinct voices of two genres to create something completely new. The performance gives Pittsburghers a chance to share their stories in an exciting way and, by opening the stage to a diverse collection of storytellers and DJs, provide a truly authentic view of the city. This helps to enrich Pittsburgh’s cultural offerings and continues to make Pittsburgh a city where creative people can find opportunities to practice the things they are passionate about.
