Beautification and Celebration of Arch Court Senior Program, a project led by Audrey Woods, engaged seniors at Arch Court and their neighbors in street-scaping workshops. Artists designed outdoor low relief concrete planters for seasonal plantings in the courtyard garden and street-scape. Community volunteers helped to fabricate and install the relief sculptures and a community-wide celebration showcased the project activities while raising awareness about senior living at Arch Court.

Bob Ziller’s Belonging design was inspired by the ancient Sri Yantra designs of India, which connoted cosmic unity. I’ve given the old design a modern, folky twist. The background was made with oil pastels on tarpaper, and the lettering was made by cutting origami papers of yellow and deep blue. The “You Belong” lettering was inspired by a handmade font created by the artist Rick Bach. Selected for its artistic merit from nearly 70 finalist submissions, the design was produced as yard signs and posters freely distributed throughout Pittsburgh and Allegheny County in 2017.

Brothers and Sisters Emerging (BASE) Digital Literacy Training and Career Enhancement Project, a project of Brothers and Sisters Emerging, prepared young African-American men for employment and training opportunities through peer mentoring, resume development, and interview skills training. B.A.S.E. obtained input from the young men in terms of the needs and interests through initial assessment surveys, peer mentoring groups, and training sessions. They also coordinated presenters to speak with participants about their experiences growing up in Garfield, the challenges they faced, and where they are now. Computer Reach provided 8 hours of Digital Literacy training over four sessions along with a digital literacy assessment.

Students also learned basic cooking skills, selecting fresh ingredients from a local grocery store and learning to use the tools needed to make 3 dishes that they could easily replicate at home.

The MBK Pittsburgh Digital Literacy Collaborative focused on enhancing organizational capacity to integrate 21st century skills into established out-of-school-time programs for a primary audience of youth, particularly young men of color ages 16-24. The community of practice connected youth-serving organizations to resource organizations with demonstrated deep experience in mentorship, youth leadership, and/or digital literacy best practices. Grantees worked together as a cohort to share ideas through a series of 5 professional development and technical assistance sessions, develop case studies of high-quality program examples, and refine plans for future programming. The partnering organizations were: Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Brothers and Sisters Emerging, Center of Life, Community College of Allegheny County Educational Foundation, Computer Reach, Focus on Renewal, Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania, New Century Careers, Will Allen Foundation, and YMCA Greater Pittsburgh.

The photographs of the students were professionally printed and displayed at a public event.

The pigeons were mounted in public places throughout the Spring Hill and a scavenger hunt map was created to engage other members of the community in the project.

Annual Gathering for Loss Loved Ones - Stop the Violence, a project of Protecting and Restoring the Order of Mankind with the Initiative to Serving Elders (PROMISE), was an event that enabled Northsiders to speak out about youth violence and conflict resolution. Positive speakers inspired attendees to work together along with law enforcement to make the community safer. Those who had lost loves ones to violence also shared their stories as a way to remember them and encouraged others that there are better ways to resolve conflict than violence.

Reach Out and Read comes to the Northside!, a project of Allegheny Clinic Pediatrics, brought the Reach Out and Read program to the Pediatric Alliance – Allegheny office. Reach Out and Read was a national program that worked to prepare the youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. The pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners advised parents to read frequently to their children and, at the same time, distributed free, brand-new, developmentally- and culturally-appropriate books to children from 6 months through 5 years of age at each regular checkup.

The Sprout Fund invited 10 former learning innovation grantees to develop digital lesson plans inspired by existing Connected Learning programs and activities. The completed lesson plans were published digitally and openly so that Pittsburgh’s Connected Learning practices can be shared with educators nationally. The lesson plans are suitable for use by other educators or teams of educators in an in-school or out-of-school-time contexts. The supported organizations were Assemble, Avonworth School District, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Heinz History Center, Homewood Children’s Village, Mt. Lebanon School District, Pennsylvania Resources Council, YMCA Greater Pittsburgh, and Youth Leading Change.

Steps in Flux, a project led by Brigette Davitt, transformed the Fineview-Briggs Avenue steps into a visual experience through color, shape, and typography. Using forced perspective, the steps were painted to create a typographic puzzle that is simultaneously visible as an abstract mural. Additionally, solar lighting was used to make the steps safer at night and the adjacent picnic area cleaned up, with native plants used to landscape the area surrounding the steps.
