In late 2003, The Sprout Fund built on the success of its “100 Bands | 31 Nights | 1 City” series from the previous year. The goal was to expand this popular showcase model beyond music to new art forms, supporting the belief that a “vibrant, active artistic community” was essential for making Pittsburgh an attractive and healthy place to live, especially for young people.
The result was AMP (Art, Music, Performance), a three-month, multi-venue series in early 2004 designed to amplify the voices of emerging artists. The Sprout Fund partnered with three key cultural venues: Club Café for music, The Andy Warhol Museum for visual art, and the Brew House Association for performance art.
The program unfolded over three distinct months. In January, Club Café hosted local bands six days a week. In February, The Andy Warhol Museum hosted a juried exhibition of 12”x12” works by local visual artists. Finally, in March, the Brew House featured weekend performances from a wide array of local performers.
AMP successfully showcased nearly 300 musicians and visual and performing artists from the 13-county region. It generated a significant “media splash” and “buzz”, giving many artists their first opportunity to perform or exhibit in a high-profile venue. The series introduced new audiences to the depth of local talent and, in the case of the Warhol show, actively encouraged new collectors to buy local art. As one visitor was overheard saying, “I didn’t even know there were artists in Pittsburgh… and this stuff is actually good”.

AMP @ Club Café: Music
In January 2004, Club Café hosted 78 local bands performing six days a week. This month-long showcase built on the success of the 2003 “100 Bands” series, highlighting the region’s eclectic music community—from “political hip hop to amorphous electronica” and “modernist reggae to anachronistic bluegrass-jazz”. The series drew 2,400 attendees and successfully connected new bands with new audiences.
Participating Bands Included: BEAM, Black Ireland, Gene Stovall with CLECT, Midnight Plowboys, Boilermaker Jazz Band, African Drum Ensemble, Allegheny Rhythm Kings, MLK Tribute Night (Urban Kontent Presents), Adam Evil and the Outside Royalty, FYAH WYAH, Xanopticon (Electronica Night), Jenn Wertz
AMP @ The Warhol: Visual Art
In February, The Andy Warhol Museum hosted a group show of small works juried by the museum’s curatorial staff. Local artists were invited to submit 12”x12” square pieces, and 138 works were selected from 272 submissions. The works were hung in a single, continuous line at eye level, creating a “frieze” with a “wonderful kind of energy”. The event was a rare and noteworthy opportunity for local artists to exhibit at The Warhol.
Exhibition and Sale
The show opened with a VIP party for nearly 400 supporters and ran for the month of February. A key goal was to “kick-ass with collectors” by offering a wide array of affordable, small-sized works, encouraging visitors to become local art patrons. By the show’s end, 21 pieces had been sold.
Pierogi 2000 Flat Files
To connect Pittsburgh’s scene to the wider emerging art world, the exhibition also featured the internationally-recognized Flat Files from Brooklyn’s Pierogi 2000 Gallery. This “banquet of art” included works from over 700 under-recognized artists from around the world.
AMP @ The Brew House: Performance
In March, the series concluded with weekend performances at the Brew House I.A.C. Garage. This component showcased 23 individuals and artistic teams selected from 44 applicants. The industrial performance space was ideal for “edgier projects” and allowed for a diverse range of work, including trapeze artistry, performative sculpture, and conventional staged plays.
Shana Moulton
A multimedia performance in which reality and fantasy collided, following a woman’s struggles with designer braces and advice from an Angela Lansbury workout video.
The Zany Umbrella Circus
A circus performance featuring Ben Sota hoisting gigantic boulders and performing a trapeze act from a giant coat hangar.
Greater Pittsburgh Barbershop Chapter, SPEBSQSA
A 30-member choir performing the classic American songbook in close harmony.
Pittsburgh Banjo Club
25 banjo players bringing the music of the 20’s and 30’s to life, from Dixieland to Polkas.
!loud: A Choreopoem
A powerful hybrid of poetry, spoken word, and drama by Vanessa German, Nikki Allen, and a DJ that focused on the lives of women.
Double Dutch Queens
Performers aged 9-12 from the Rankin Christian Center demonstrating jumps and tricks.
Attack Theatre
A premiere dance piece that delved into the true thoughts and dreams of a stereotypical 1950s Hollywood couple using dance and video.
University of Pittsburgh Gamelan
A troupe performing Indonesian music, puppetry, dance, and drama, featuring two visiting artists from Indonesia.
