BOOM Concepts, CMU’s CREATE Lab, and The Sprout Fund worked together to coordinate a city-wide coalition at the 2017 Allied Media Conference (AMC) in partnership with other Pittsburgh-based organizations. Upon return to Pittsburgh, the coalition gathered to debrief, discuss key findings, and create an open letter in service of small community organizations outlining recommendations for work as a unified network of media and youth agencies.

Architecture Learning Network, a project of Carnegie Mellon University, Carnegie Museum of Art, Assemble, Fallingwater, and Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, involved youth directly in the process of making in order to motivate them to take greater responsibility in their world. Brighton Woods Greenway, a project of Hollow Oak Land Trust, formalized the woodland trail system connecting Brighton Heights to Riverview Park in Woods Run/Brightwood. A community stewardship plan for trails and invasive plant control was created in addition to wayfinding signage and a trail map. The project empowered community members to become greenway stewards, helping to coordinate trail maintenance through the development of an active volunteer program.

Buddy Benches for my Little Buddies, a project of 12-year old Hayden Zissis, painted and installed benches at the elementary schools in the Canon McMillan School District. The Buddy Benches were meant to encourage students to include their peers during recess, serving as a place for children to go when they don’t have anyone to play with. Hayden decorated the benches with handprints of students and the words “Buddy Bench” and went to the schools to teach the elementary students the purpose of the benches after they were installed.

CCAC Allegheny Campus Food Pantry, a project of Community College of Allegheny County Educational Foundation, provided qualifying CCAC students with groceries once a month along with information on food assistance programs designed to reduce hunger and improve college retention. CCAC students volunteered to pack and sort the groceries, however only CCAC staff interacted with students receiving the groceries in order to be sensitive to the dignity of the students and lessen the stigma around participating in the program.

Workshops were used to get to know the veterans contributing coloring pages and sorting crayons to be distributed with the coloring books. Events will be used to distribute the coloring books both locally and to soldiers abroad.

Hope for the Homeless, a project of L.I.V.I.N.G. Ministry, was comprised of Pittsburgh’s largest clothing and food distribution event for the homeless and a conference specifically designed for people who serve the homeless. The project’s goal was to change how people feel about the homeless and to share ways how people can help care for the homeless. More than 325 volunteers helped throughout the project, which resulted in photos of love, compassion, joy, and oneness instead of the more typical fear, anger, and frustration around homeless people. In total, more than 500 people received food, clothing, and raffle prizes at the distribution event and 74 service providers from over 12 organizations participated in the conference. The project additionally raised over $2,000 through an ioby crowdfunding campaign.

Ice Station Zebra, a project of Artist Image Resource, was an interactive exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh that gave a local audience an introduction to Cold War era politics, geography, and the study of period communications technology. Artist Image Resource’s Youth Open Studio assisted with the creation of the exhibit and the associated programming which involved a live ‘radio-controlled’ dialogue with children in Russia and Norway, recreating the set of the film Ice Station Zebra for the two remote audiences.

Introduction to Solidworks and Design, a project of Carnegie Mellon University, Sarah Heinz House, City Charter High School, and University of Pittsburgh, combined the efforts of the four partners’ FIRST Robotics Competition teams to teach youth computer aided design (CAD), specifically Solidworks, in order to design parts and create mechanisms from assembly of parts. When completed, youth were able to fabricate their parts using 3D printing, local machine shops, and other rapid prototyping technologies.

The John Show, a project led by Julie Sokolow, was a series of screenings of the documentary The John Show that used corresponding speaker panels as a platform for discussion of mental health. The documentary focused on “John Riegert,” an exhibition at SPACE Gallery that featured 250 portraits of local artist John Riegert created by his peers. After a serious suicide attempt, the exhibition and documentary were put together to rally John’s spirits and bring awareness to the issue of mental health. The panel was comprised of the film’s director, producer, artists involved with the exhibition, and an expert in mental health.

Kickin’ Butts, a project of Northside Leadership Conference, addressed the issues of cigarette butt refuse on the Northside, which are known to choke drains and pollute the environment. Through the project, 100 cigarette receptacles were affixed to existing trash cans and light polls throughout business districts on the Northside in order to provide places for the proper disposal of cigarette butts. Additionally, Kickin’ Butts activities took place to draw more attention to the receptacles and promote use by the community.

Each neighborhood hosted a local tournament, with the winning team representing each neighborhood in a tournament that determined the grand champion team.

The podcast participants shared their experiences, discussed treatments and symptoms, took listener questions, and debunked stereotypes in order to educate community members about mental illness. The open mic night event gave community members the opportunity to share their experiences with a live audience, having the ability to choose to share their own story or read stories submitted by people who do not want to speak publicly.

Metamorphosis - “She’s Got Her Wings”, a project of of Ayeshah Bulls, was a performance arts project geared towards creating a space for women of color on the Northside to share their stories of traumatic experiences. Through the project, 5 women worked through a process of group sharing, therapeutic groups, field trips, and guest speakers to reflect on how their individual experiences impacted who they are today. This process helped them to share the resulting art through a performance at Neu Kirche Contemporary Arts Center as a way to encourage and empower women that are silently suffering. Audience members, who included participants of various organizations that serve women who have experienced trauma, offered encouraging feedback and applauded the participants’ inspiring healing process.

For this project, Homewood Children’s Village was responsible for meetings, communication, advocacy, and evaluation. Meetings were convened with community stakeholders, partner organizations, funders, and supporters to build communities of practice. Communications strategies sustained and enhanced knowledge sharing, learnings, events, and relevant activities, along with implementation of Trucio.com online technology to display and organize participating organizations. Advocacy efforts strategically built influence resulting in policy change recommendations. Evaluation engaged an interdisciplinary team of evaluators and researchers from the region who supplemented the project management team on each MBK goal subcommittee, with a goal of refining the evaluation plan, determining the data needs, and crafting analysis plans that will build the comprehensive MBK evaluation.
